 SKINNER, Allan Maclean. Called to the bar June 1867; appointed, after competitive examination, to the civil service of the Straits Settlements November 1868; appointed Acting Sheriff of Singapore after qualifying in Malay January 1871; confirmed  April 1871; appointed Acting Magistrate Province Wellesley, Penang, April 1871; accompanied, July 1871, expedition to Selangor; appointed January 1873 Inspector of Schools to report on state of education; also Inspector of Prisons, Hospitals and Asylums for the Colony; attended the Governor at Pangkor during negotiations with the headmen of Perak January 1874; in August gazetted Acting Assistant Colonial Secretary and Clerk of Council; appointed Acting Postmaster-General February 1876.

Peter Benson Maxwell

MAXWELL, Sir Peter Benson. Knt. Bach. (Creat. 1856). Son of the Rev. Peter Benson Maxwell of Birdstorn, Donegal; born 1815; married 1842 daughter of Francis Synge Esq., of Glanmore Castle, Wicklow; educated in Paris, and at Trinity College, Dublin; was called to the bar (Middle Temple) 1841 and went the home circuit; appointed Recorder of Penang, Straits Settlements, February 1856; appointed Recorder of Singapore June 1866. William Alexander Pickering

PICKERING, William Alexander. Resided on the Island of Formosa from 1863 to December  1870 during which time he received the thanks for the United States Government for assisting in the negotiation of a treaty with the savages at the south of that island; was also thanked by the British Minister at Pekin for rescuing Spanish subjects from slavery; appointed Chinese interpreter Straits Settlements December 1871; during 1874 was engaged in the Native States and twice received the thanks for the Secretary of State for the Colonies for conducting the negotiations which terminated successfully in the pacification of Larut, and for services in Sungei Ujoong; appointed Justice of the Peace and Police Magistrate Singapore March 1874; Protector of Chinese emigrants April 1877.
